Process and Color
Renee Phillips & Kati Vilim
Process and Color features new works by Renee Phillips & Kati Vilim. Renee Phillips investigates the natural world at both the macro and micro levels, Phillips’ methodical approach aims to freeze moments in time through her exploration of paint. The artist’s process relies heavily on learned alchemical techniques, intuition and physicality. An intensive layering and re-working of the canvas results in highly tactile and seductive surfaces: paint is poured on; sanded off; manipulated with the elements of heat, wind and water; glazed; enameled and reapplied until a certain energetic frequency is achieved. Exclusively for this exhibition, Phillips will be creating a color theory installation using paint provided by Farrow & Ball.
The work of Kati Vilim originates from the invisible underlying structures of science and mathematics. Vilim expresses these structures through compositions built of geometric forms, transparency, color, ratio or rules as repetition, and symmetry. She considers the complicated way in which our minds create a translation of an image with the ultimate goal being to present the viewer with work that helps to open up new ways to understand the world. For this exhibition, Vilim will create two site-specific light installations.
