Pen + Brush is pleased to announce our presentation of works by Deborah Jack at this year’s SCOPE Art Show in Miami, from December 5– 10th, 2023. This is the first time in our 129-year history as a non-profit working towards gender equity in the arts that Pen + Brush will participate in an art fair—and it is important for us to be here.
Like P+B, SCOPE has played an essential role in promoting and cementing the voices of important
contemporary artists today.
Dawn Delikat states: “As the executive director of Pen + Brush and someone who is deeply committed
to the mission, I am thrilled to acknowledge this wonderful growth partnership opportunity with
SCOPE Art Show. This represents a significant milestone for us, and it’s an exciting chance to share
our work with a broader audience. By featuring artist Deborah Jack at SCOPE this year, we are
extending our reach and embracing a new lens through which we can engage with the artworld and
collectors, deepening Pen + Brush’s equity and access conversation.”
Deborah Jack is not just a growing, yet still undiscovered, artist but a visionary who has consistently
pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. Jack’s work challenges viewers to consider land,
ancestral memory, and personal histories, as well as how aspects of climate change affect not only
the Caribbean but also their own lives.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands and raised on Saint Martin, Jack’s works are an amalgamation of
canonized modernist aesthetics and the artist’s own transcultural existence. Her photography, video
and sound installations, and paintings feature strikingly beautiful, yet ominous scenes of water, land,
weather patterns, and salt, both as subject and material. Jack’s affinity for dichotomies, as well as her
belief that a place holds memory—and those memories can be of both trauma and healing, prompts important discussions about personal and societal histories, both in and outside the art world. So, as much as Jack’s work is about the island, it is also a roadmap for addressing both our present and our past.
Pen + Brush is proud to announce that Deborah Jack’s video piece 𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘬𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘵… 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘳𝘦𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘥, 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘩… has been acquired as a part of the Pérez Art Museum Miami Prize from our booth at this year’s SCOPE Art Show.
